Guess what this is...
This is a mountain of SALT. Eric was curious about how the salt got from the water to the dry stuff at the dinner table. Here are some more salt pictures from the west side of the lake. If you look really close you can see a buldozer that is pushing the salt around. This may look wet, but it is bone dry. It is so amazing, all salt.
When we we lived in Reno and would make the trips to Salt Lake (often) we would stop at a rest stop by the salt flats. There is a big tower you can go up and look out over the flats. Many people would write messages with rocks on the flats. We would too. We had to steal rocks from other peoples creations to write ours, shhhh don't tell. Anyway your post made me remember the fun we used to have.
